Numa notícia publicada no The Independent sobre o desaparecimento da pequena McCann, pode-se ler a seguinte revelação:

Parece-me que o Independent descobriu um dos maiores embustes do século XX. A maioria dos lusos continua a acreditar que o Estado Novo era, entre outras coisas, anti-comunista. Afinal, mais de trinta anos depois, ficamos a saber que o Estado Novo não era mais do que um regime comunista, disfarçado de anti-comunista para, de forma insidiosa, minar a NATO por dentro. Não fossem os ingénuos anti-fascistas que afinal eram anti-comunistas e, portanto, fascistas, e a estas horas talvez tivéssemos um governo de direita que no fundo teria políticas de esquerda à séria.
